The Jade Buddha Temple
 |
 |
The Jade Buddha Temple is one of the
main touristic highlights of Shanghai and it's also one of
the best conserved temples in China. The Jade Buddha Temple
was built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (A.D.
1875-1909) and burned down in the early 20th century. In 1918,
Jade Buddha Temple was rebuilt on Anyuan Road. The construction
of the temple is in the magnificent architectural style of
the Song Dynasty. The temple is composed of several compounds
such as the Halls of Heavenly Kings, the Main Hall, the Hall
of the Sleeping Buddha and the Hall of the Jade Buddha. The
highlight is the two meter high solid white jade Buddha encrusted
with jewels and weighing in at nearly 1000kg or 2200 pounds,
the 6-foot tall seated Jade Buddha, carved from a single piece
of white jade in Burma and brought to China in 1882, the buddha
is rumored to have been brought to Shanghai from Myanmar (Burma)
via Tibet, and the temple was built around this awesome relic.
The grounds are also quite beautiful, and when the crowds
aren't bad, very peaceful as well. The Jade Buddha Temple
is one of Shanghai's few Buddhist temples as well as one of
its most popular tourist destinations, and attracts numerous
pilgrims from within China and overseas Chinese. |
