The Dianchi Lake was known as "Diannan Ze" (South Yunnan Lake) in ancient times. From the north to the south, the whole lake is approximately 40 km long and its average width from the east to the west amounts to 7 km. It has a coastal line of more than 160 km and an area of approximately 300 square kilometers. It has an average depth of 5 m, the greatest depth being 10 meters.With a total water capacity of about 1,500,000,000 cubic meters, it is known as the largest lake in southwest China and ranks sixth among the fresh water lakes in China. With a beautiful landscape, the lake is known as a "plateau jewel" and has been a tourist and summer resort in history. Throughout the ages, many scholars and calligraphers have produced numerous works for its beauty, of which the "longest couplet in China" by Sun Ranweng is the most famous.
