Jinghong, formerly known as Cheli, is
a county in the center of Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture
of Tai Nationality in Yunnan Province. It was the seat of
the Cheli Civil and Military Governor General's Office successively
through three dynasties (1271-1911A.D.). In 1927 it was
renamed Cheli County and in 1954 made into four bannas (meaning
"counties" in the Dai language) - Jinghong, Menglong,
Mengyang, and Mengwang. It was again merged into Banna Jinghong
County in 1960. The Lancang River runs obliquely across
the territory which is inhabited by the Dai, Han, Hani,
and other nationalities.
Jinghong abounds in rice, sugar cane,
tea, cotton, teak, and a large variety of fruit. It also
produces camphor, sisal hemp, shellac, and rubber. Industrial
development in the fields of electric power, metallurgy,
machine tools, tea processing, sugar refining, and timber
processing has been notable since 1949.
China has fifty-five minority nationalities
living in border and mountain regions. The Dais live in
compact communities in Xishuangbanna and elsewhere in Yunnan.
Records in the Han language about this nationality date
back to the first century A.D. Envoys with entourages of
musicians and magicians were sent to Luoyang, the capital
of the Easter Han Dynasty by the Dai chieftain, on whom
the court conferred the title of Grand Governor General
of the Han. Ties between the Dai and other nationalities
were developed and consolidated.
