Jianshui is located in Honghe Prefecture, it is one of the earliest developed cities in south Yunnan and remains an important transportation crossroad. Jianshui has a history of more than 1,200 years. Long history has endowed Jianshui an abundant cultural heritage, the city is surrounded by mountains and is 200 kilometers from Kunming.

The earliest establishment of the city can be dated back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). Since the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), it has developed to a trade and cultural center. Jianshui enjoys the fame of being the "the Museum of Ancient Constructions". There are more than 100 ancient temples and 50 ancient bridges in this area. Those buildings of historic are still kept in good condition, including the Private Garden of the Zhu Family, the Confucius Temple, the Chaoyang Gateway Arch, the Ancient Nalou Office Building, the Shuanglong Bridge, and the Zhilin Temple.

Apart from cultural attractions, the surroundings are also delightful. Only 20 miles east of Jianshui, the Swallow Cave is one of the biggest caves in Asia. There is a dry cave, a water cave and over 7 million acres of forest. In the spring and summer, thousands of swallows migrate from Malaysia, building nests and giving birth to their baby swallows. Moreover, there are three state nature reserves in this region, namely the Fenshuiling Mountain, the Daweishan Mountain, and the Huanglianshan Mountain are rich in natural resources.
