Tree Embraced Stupa

The Dai in Dehong generally believe in Hinayana Buddhism. Almost every village has its own temple. The Tree Wrapped Stupa in Mangshi is the most magnificent.

The temple was built in early Qing Dynasty by Fang Zoufan, the 15th official of the Appeasing Government of Mangshi. The temple survived many wars and fire and was thus known as iron. For this reason, the local people called it Gong Mu Jie Lie, which means The Stupa of the Iron City. The 19th governor of Mangshi renovated the temple again in late Qing Dynasty. Because he believed that such action would bring him offsprings.The Stupa itself is around 7 meters high and built on a hexagonal base. At present, the stupa is a shrine to a stature of Buddha.
